Pigeon Pose

Pigeon Pose
Pigeon Pose

Pigeon pose (Kapotasana), is a strong hip opener that improves flexibility throughout the body and prepares the yogi for more challenging poses in the king pigeon series.

Pigeon Pose is a half split with one leg stretched back so the top of the foot presses into the mat and the other leg is bent in front with the calf resting on the ground. The torso lifts, opening the chest, with a slight arch in the back.

Regular practicing the Pigeon Pose provides many benefits.

This pose focuses on opening your hips, which supports mobility and flexibility in that joint.

Pigeon Pose also stretches your hip flexors and lower back, which are commonly tight due to prolonged sitting. Stretching these muscles regularly may alleviate mild lower back or hip pain.

This pose is also believed to support digestion through gentle stretching and movement of your lower abdomen. This may assist with the movement of digested food through the intestinal tract.

Finally, stress, sadness and fear are stored in your hips. Regular practicing the pose may help relieve internal stress or worry.
